Botanist’s 13-Year Quest Ends in Tears Over Rare Flower Rediscovery

SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, Septian “Deki” Andriki collapsed into the mud and wept, overcome by the sight that had eluded him for more than a decade: the blood-red, white-speckled petals of Rafflesia hasseltii unfurling in the Sumatran rainforest.

Andriki, a former elementary school physical education teacher who taught himself to hunt rafflesia, had spent 13 years tracking rumors, dead ends, and fragmentary reports across the Indonesian archipelago, searching for a species that had not been confirmed in the wild since before 2015. The breakthrough came through a local resident’s tip, leading Andriki—alongside Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and Joko Ridho Witono of the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency—on a nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited forest in Sijunjung Regency.

“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” Andriki later recalled. “I just cried.” A forest ranger initially thought the weeping botanist had been possessed by spirits; Thorogood described watching the moment as feeling like “the luckiest guy alive.”

The Physiognomy of a Parasite

Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a genus of roughly 42 species—bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites that lack leaves, stems, and roots. They live invisibly inside host vines for years, surfacing only during brief blooming periods when they produce flowers spanning nearly a meter across and emitting a rotting-meat odor that attracts carrion flies for pollination.

That biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists—and nearly impossible to protect. Researchers estimate that about two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, vulnerable to logging, land conversion, and human disturbance. The 2025 rediscovery, part of a multinational Oxford-led effort involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, served as both a taxonomic milestone and a conservation alert. The team has been collecting DNA from over a dozen rafflesia varieties across Indonesia to map the genus’s evolutionary relationships, hoping genetics might finally explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably.

A Widespread but Quiet Enterprise

The Sumatran discovery captured global headlines, but it represents only the most visible example of a far larger undertaking: the unglamorous, systematic work of identifying and naming Earth’s plant species—often for the first time, and sometimes for the last.

At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists describe roughly 200 new plant species annually—about one in every 10 species named worldwide. The Garden’s 2025 highlights included a Costa Rican moonlight cactus (Selenicereus), discovered after tropical entomologist William Haber passed a cutting to curator Barry Hammel some two decades ago. Hammel kept the cutting through retirement and waited until the plant flowered in his own Costa Rican yard to confirm the new species, now believed likely endangered.

Other Missouri Garden discoveries included Mimusops sahakensis, an endangered sapodilla-family member known from only two sites on Madagascar’s eastern coast, both threatened by charcoal production, and Diospyros schatzii, a new persimmon relative named for a late Garden botanist.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Most striking was Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis—the grape genus behind one of the world’s most economically important crops—built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores. It marked only the third recognized Vitis subgenus in nearly a century.

Discovery by Drone and by Chance

Not all breakthroughs required deep expeditions. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley spotted small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers growing between desert rocks—something never documented in the park’s long survey history. She photographed the plant and uploaded images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering expert identification that led to an entirely new genus, nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus found in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm deployed a drone equipped with a robotic collecting arm to reach a Kauai cliff face inaccessible to human botanists. The drone retrieved samples of Schiedea waiahuluensis, a previously unknown carnation-family plant—and likely the first new plant species discovered by drone. The mission also yielded an unidentified insect that scientists are still evaluating as a possible new species.

A Race Against Dark Extinction

These discoveries tell two stories simultaneously. One celebrates persistence: a 13-year rafflesia hunt, a two-decade cactus wait, a volunteer’s chance photograph, a robot arm reaching where no hand could. The other is sobering: many newly named plants are already among the rarest organisms on Earth, restricted to single mountain ranges, sand dune stretches, or cliff faces—and already imperiled by logging, conversion, or habitat loss.

As botanists at both the Missouri Botanical Garden and Smithsonian have long argued, naming a species is not merely academic—it is the legal prerequisite for protection, funding, and conservation planning. A plant without a name has no defense. Only after Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive and blooming could researchers begin arguing, with data in hand, for stronger protections in a forest where most known populations remain outside any protected boundary.

Scientists estimate thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition—a phenomenon researchers call “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
